A note on how we spend time

It's my birthday today! And, yes, I'm one of those people that gets excited about my birthday.

But, not because I like attention (I don't) and not because I want gifts or a reason to drink too much wine (I don't need a reason for that).

I like birthdays because it's a day that we call out specifically and say...

Hey, it's been a whole year - what did it look like?

Am I happier this year than I was last year?

Did I do some important things?

Did I help some people?

Am I on track?

My friend Krista over at 12 Minute Athlete writes a post every year about her reflections on her birthday and this year, they're are pretty damn awesome and they got me thinking. A lot.

She's a total badass. She can do one-handed handstands - enough said.

She prioritises fitness every single day.

We all have the same amount of time and, if we want to, we can make huge strides towards our goals every single day. But, we don't always see time that way.

We don't always consider that every minute we "spend" is a vote for what we want more of in our future.

The way we spend our time is a measurement of our priorities and a glimpse into our future.

"Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway" - Earl Nightingale

If you list all the priorities in your life, how much time per day do you spend on each thing? If it were a bar graph (#nerdalert), what would it look like? Would the time you spend on each item be representative of your priorities?

I've worked really hard over the past year. Fact. And today, I'm celebrating that. I love my work and what I've accomplished.

But, I'm also looking at how I can work more strategically by spending my time more thoughtfully. I'm thinking about how much of my time is aligned with what I'm working towards.

And, of course, I'm thinking about how my systems support or don't support those goals.

What about you? What is ONE THING you want to accomplish in 2018 that would make you feel like 2018 was a success if you accomplished it?
